My interest in ceramics began with my exposure to Native American Art as a young boy. My father was an architect and his hobby was collecting Native American Art. He had several beautiful ceramic pieces. As with all handmade clay work, I wondered about the maker. This led me to pursue an education in anthropology and, more specifically, archaeology. After graduating from the University of Denver with a degree in anthropology, I worked as an archaeologist sub-contractor. Once again, I was placed in direct contact with pottery made hundreds of years in the past and I was left to wonder about their makers.
The Artist: Robert Rowland

After a series of serendipitous events, I had the opportunity to learn how to make wheel-thrown stoneware from a studio potter in Denver, Colorado. With an apprenticeship behind me, I moved to the Southwest and opened my first studio in Phoenix, Arizona in 1976. While in Phoenix, I honed my skills and expanded from purely functional to architectural design, again a reflection of my father's influence during my youth. Another influence at the time was the close proximity of Frank Lloyd Wright's Talliesan West. As a youth, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Wright. Phoenix proved to be an amazing growing period for me and my work. I began the craft fair circuit, met many fantastic fellow artisans, took graduate courses at Arizona State University in the ceramics department and workshops with nationally renown potters, fulfilled architectural ceramic commissions, sold my work to galleries, and participated in group shows at the Heard Museum in Phoenix.

Unexpected and delightful events took hold of me once more and I moved to the Napa Valley of California in 1979. This move would prove even more challenging than the previous one, but no less fruitful. Here, I was encouraged to begin a relationship with many wineries in Napa and Sonoma Counties, the San Francisco Bay area, and the greater California area – relationships that still thrive today. In general, I create my designs for resale, along with custom designs for winery use.

My most recent move was to Sonoma County, where I continue my winery-related business in ceramics. I also sell my pieces from my studio by appointment and participate in occasional shows and local fairs.
